Marin Mansion Sells for Record, Buyer May be Part of Renowned Bay Area Family

According to SF Gate, Marin County has witnessed its most expensive home sale of 2024, with the off-market transaction of Thomas J. Coates’ estate in Ross for an impressive $23.5 million, according to The Real Deal. Coates, chairman of Jackson Square Properties, previously purchased the property at 9 Upper Ames Ave. in 2021 for $20 million. The 6,758-square-foot home, inspired by Hamptons mansions, includes luxurious features such as a pool and a 1,000-bottle wine cellar.

While the buyer remains anonymous, connections have been made to the Bechtel family, known for their significant wealth and historic construction firm, estimated at $10 billion. This transaction significantly surpasses the previous highest residential sale in Marin County for 2024, a waterfront property in Sausalito sold for $14.4 million.

This sale not only sets a new benchmark in Marin’s real estate market but also highlights the ongoing demand for luxury properties in the region.
